Sand-Crusted Fish

[Cruise Series]
Jan. 25, 2012 - Our first stop in Progreso was the beach where Karen went for a paddle, and, considering I'm not fond of swimming or getting in the water, I looked for photos to shoot.

This gull was great fun to watch. He would pick up this dead and sand-covered fish and carry it around, then drop it, pick it up again, and then drop it again. He repeated this cycle several times, but in the end, I think he decided he was never going to get enough sand off of it to make a fit meal.

P.S. Karen get's credit for the title - a play on Parmesan-crusted fish, of course. :-)

Great series of captures! It looks like he was tossing the fish in the air in that center shot! Maybe he was looking to see if it was still alive? And when the fish didn't flop, the gull thought, "I'm not eating that dead thing!"

I love seeing this cycle of this gull's food choices...or not !
Apparently he doesn't care for 'sand-crusted.' Maybe he would have preferred 'Parmesan crusted.' ;-)

great series ... poor bird, but then again, he doesn't look starved, so there will have been 'other fish to fry' perhaps ...
