Silly Tuesday - Feeding Norbert

Posted by
Jason Politte (Conway, AR, United States) on 3 April 2012 in Animal & Insect.

For a couple of months before our cruise, Karen had her eye on an Eyelash Crested Gecko at our local pet store. However, she didn't want to purchase him just before leaving for a week. The day after we arrived home, we went straight to the store and purchased Norbert and all the necessary supplies for proper husbandry.

So, here's our newest member of the family sitting on Karen's hand and eating from a small measuring spoon. He's a flame morph (based upon the coloration), which is quite appropriate considering he's named after Hagrid's pet dragon in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Interested in purchasing prints of my photographs?

My wife Karen also has a photoblog at Open Door.

Joyce from United States

Yay!! Yes of course. I recognised Norbert right away. :-D He is really a beautiful lizard, Jason. So coincidental. Last night reading a novel with a pet Gecko who lived in a large brandy sniffer made into a bio sphere type thing. Goofy, but fun to see your post this morning. He's a sweety. More photos to come as he looks in different light and places. It's endless.

3 Apr 2012 3:14pm

@Joyce: Thank you very much, Joyce. :-) Not sure how many we'll see of him in different light . . . Norbert's nocturnal you see. :-)) But, I'm sure I'll get some more shots of him. Karen has some really great ones - much better than this one IMO.

Jeff from Pembroke Dock, Wales., United Kingdom

I Want One..NOW !!.

3 Apr 2012 6:02pm

@Jeff: Ha ha - they're becoming more common in the pet trade. The best thing about them is that they prefer temps around 21 - 26 Celsius, so they're good at room temperature. No need for heat lamps or anything. :-)

fereshteh. from Iran

wow!
Excellent ...................

He is a very cute little guy! How big do they get? I have never seen one before.

3 Apr 2012 7:31pm

@Elaine Hancock: Thanks, Elaine! :-) They get anywhere from 8 - 10 inches.

franz from Baden, Austria

how cute ... now i know why hagrid was so sad to see him off to romania ... ;-))
(i bet you didn't get him from norway, ridgeback or not ...!)

3 Apr 2012 7:34pm

@franz: Ha ha - oh yes, poor Hagrid. Our Norbert won't be going to Romania, that's for sure. No, we didn't get him from Norway :-)) . . . these geckos originally hail from New Caledonia. All the ones in the pet trade our captive bred and raised these days though as they're classified endangered in the wild. It was thought these lizards were extinct for many years until a group of scientists happened upon them. All the Crested Geckos for sale today originate from the ones that were collected by those scientists. Interesting, eh? Thanks much, Franz!

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

Amazing !
It seems to be in translucence gelatine ...

3 Apr 2012 7:59pm

@Gérard Beullac: Thanks! It's actually a powdered food that's mixed with water. It contains all of the nutrition that a Crested Gecko needs. :-)

omid from mashhad, Iran

wooooow!
