Jason Politte (Conway, AR, United States) on 21 May 2012 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

Yesterday's Solar Eclipse shot through my Meade 2080 8" SCT telescope.

Interested in purchasing prints of my photographs?

My wife Karen also has a photoblog at Open Door.

21 May 2012 8:40am

@Francisco Romero: Thanks Francisco - yep, those are sunspots. :-)

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Amazing shot Jason!
You have some sort of special mount to get your camera on the end of the telescope?

21 May 2012 8:44am

@Curly: Thanks Curly! I use a T mount and adaptor that screws onto the back of the telescope. It replaces the mirror diagonal and basically turns the telescope into a 2000mm lens.

Incredible photo result, Jason. The sunspots are great and so is the textured rim of the moon as it takes this bite out of our star.

Aw we didn't have an eclipse..And if we did I expect it would be too cloudy to see it,so thank you for this beautiful shot, glad your back.

21 May 2012 7:54pm

@Jeff: Yeah, Arkansas just got the first half of it before sunset, and I was pretty worried about us clouding up. However we just ended with a bit of cirrus that actually helped to be able to view it. It was a great show! Thank you very much, Jeff.

RBL from Oxford, United States

Fantastic capture, beautiful color...our area wasn't in the viewing area for this event! Fantastic that your area was.

21 May 2012 8:52pm

@RBL: Thanks much, Ruthie. Arkansas just got the first half of the sun being covered before the sun set. Would love to have been able to see full coverage. Regardless, it was a great show.

DarkElf from Perth, Australia

stunning bit of photography through the telescope! the focus, sharpness and details are all wonderful and are a testimony to your superb technique!

22 May 2012 1:46am

@DarkElf: Thank you very much! I must say the live view mode of the 50d is perfect for this sort of thing. It's just about impossible to get the image focused just using the viewfinder when the camera's mounted to the telescope.

PD from Kansas, United States

Really nice shot! Great work!
